With this opinion, the Swedish National Council on Medical Ethics (Smer) wishes to emphasise the many ethical issues that arise in xenotransplantation, both in preclinical and clinical research and in a possible future treatment phase. The purpose of the opinion is to stimulate public debate and provide a basis for further analysis of regulation and practice.
