Smer comments Opportunistic genomic screening

Whole genome sequencing is expected to become a normal part of future investigations of disease. It aims to detect genetic variants that are important for diagnosis and treatment. When such an investigation is carried out, it can look for other genetic variants not related to the disease that is the subject of the investigation, but which may entail an increased risk of other diseases, which is termed oppostunistic genomic screening.

Commenting on an article from the European Society of Human Genetics, the Swedish National Council on Medical Ethics discusses ethical aspects on opportunistic genomic screening in this publication.
