The 12:th World Congress of Bioethics took place in Mexico City the 24-27 of June. The Congress was attended by more than 1200 researchers and other professionals from 72 different countries. During the congress a wide variety of topics related to current and future challenges within bioethics were covered. The congress is convened by a global organisation, the International Association of Bioethics (IAB).
The Swedish National Council on Medical Ethics was represented by the chair Kjell Asplund who reported on the public debate on surrogacy in Sweden that followed upon the release of the Councils report Assisted reproduction – ethical aspects. In addition, Karin Wilbe Ramsay from the secretariat reported on the Councils discussions and conclusions regarding mitochondrial replacements therapies.
