In february 2026 SMER published the report Assisted reproduction – opportunities and choices. The purpose of the report is to provide a broad, up-to-date overview of the area, with a particular focus on developments in methods, technologies and practices in recent years. The Council has also looked to the future and notes that, with the new technologies currently being researched – the development of gametes from somatic cells, artificial wombs and increasingly accurate analyses of the risks of the development of diseases and the characteristics of fertilised eggs – the way in which people have children could change fundamentally. The report primarily addresses the Swedish Government and the Riksdag, but is also intended to stimulate debate and reflection among healthcare providers, professionals and the broader public.
